This year I’ll often follow each reflection with a second note like this, responding to a question and offering a simple way that you can explore the topic for yourself.

If you haven’t read this months discussion, read or listen to it here first.

Question

“I understand the idea of ‘being a yes to life,’ but how do I actually apply this when I’m trying to change something in my life?”

When we’re trying to make life different from the way it is right now, something tightens inside us.

A subtle resistance appears.

And that resistance affects your energy, your clarity, and the way you interact with the people and situations around you.

What I’m really talking about is choosing life exactly as it is. Choosing our circumstances, as they are, without resistance.

This allows you to open.

You see resistance creates boundaries.

We don’t want to live as if life is being done to us.

We want to be a fully active participant in it.

What we really want is to have all the possibilities of life available to us.

Remember — the future has not yet been created.

When you take on responsibility for the whole of life, something profound happens.

You move from individual to universal.

And that is a pretty powerful place to be.

If I am responsible for everything, then in a sense, I have access to everything.

And that makes anything possible.

It also helps me move with awareness — because I am responsible.

I won’t act carelessly or unconsciously.

When we choose life and expand into possibility, It becomes refreshing and alive.

Our lives are meant to be significant, don’t get caught in the distortion of the mind.

Lets break it into four steps

  • Begin with acceptance (non-resistance)

  • Shift from identification to authorship

  • Expand identity beyond the personal

  • Act from awareness rather than resistance

Ok here's how to apply this very simply;

Imagine there is something you want to move toward — any goal, any change.

Right now fully choosing where you are at.

Not liking it.

Not approving of it.

Simply choosing it.

“These are my circumstances. And I take ownership of them.”

From there, notice what changes.

Often something softens.

Sometimes a quiet excitement appears.

Now expand your view.

Instead of seeing yourself as an individual person trying to get something from life, let yourself feel responsible for the whole of it.

From this place, choose a step that moves you in the direction you want to go.

Don’t bring anything else — no defense, without inner argument.

And notice how life begins to respond.

P.S. If this topic (or any of my other letters) sparked a question, you can drop it here.  I read and answer them all.

Practice For The Month

Sit quietly, with a soft gaze.

Become aware of how your body is breathing.

Don’t change anything — just observe.

Now listen for the sound that is furthest away.

Notice how your awareness expanded when you did that.

While maintaining that expanded awareness, gently bring your attention to the things in front of you.

See if you can keep that sense of openness.

Now try doing a simple task from this expanded state.
